Tampon help! I can't put them in..?

Please help me! I've been trying to put a tampon in forever, I know the right 'hole', it's just I can't get it in. I don't see where it would go really, it's like the tampon won't ever fit in there, only something about the size of a pencil and short like a Q tip could possibly fit, I've tried lying down, sitting on the toilet, putting one foot up, everything! I'm totally relaxed, and I don't want anyone else to do that's just gross. I need to use tampons! I've had my period for two years and have used pads the entire time, it's getting really annoying. Yes, I talked to my mom,aunt, and even grandma, those are the only females I'm close enough to ask. My friend only uses pads, and my other one doesn't even have her period yet (shes a dancer and plays volleyball). I have the smallest size available, and whenever I out it in, it sticks out about an inch including the string. So what do I do? I've googled and researched everywhere! Please help!? Also, am I too small?
